There are five types of tests given by instructors in order to analyze a student's skill level. The first test is the placement test which is used to place students into the correct class based on their language ability. Once the student has been placed in their correct language level, they are given a diagnostic or pre test that allows the teacher of the class to determine the student's strengths and weakness. This helps the teacher find strategies that most appropriately benefit the student's learning. Pretests are used before the actual exam, they can be quizzes, graded or not graded. The purpose of pretests are to allow the students to practice what they learned to prepare them for the bigger tests. General external exams and assessments are not required to be taken in a language school. Some external exams include TOEFL which is the test of English as a Foreign Language required by US universities if admission students are non native speakers. Cambridge Assessment is the non teaching department of the University of Cambridge responsible for assessment in the UK OCR Examinations Board.
