The material provided in the first unit has helped me to consider the many factors influencing the teaching and learning experience. It has introduced me to the qualities of a good teacher and a good learner and emphasizes the importance of the teacher/student dynamic as a basis for successful teaching and learning. Whilst expert subject knowledge,good organizational and managerial skills are required to teach, the most important criteria for being a good teacher is the desire and ability to tune into each student and support them individually and collectively in completing their studies. The most common breakdown of differing language abilities can be classified as Beginners, Elementary, Low/Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Advanced with progressing awareness, understanding and fluency through the levels. Age and competency levels of students influence factors such as motivation, learning experience, language awareness and behavior and such differences need to be considered by the teacher to adjust teaching methodologies and expectations of students accordingly.
