I learned the importance of the receptive skills which include reading and listening. There are two general categories for the reasons and motives for reading and listening; they are one, for a purpose and two, for entertainment. While the former's main objective is to achieve some particular aim or goal, like listening to directions to get to a certain destination, the latter's main objective lies mostly in a person's personal interests, like reading a famed novel because he/she finds it enjoyable. When reading and listening, we have to understand that we use not just our eyes and ears, but also our minds as we recognize these words through our personal experiences. Our pre-existing knowledge of the world, which increases daily, helps us grasp the overall meanings of the things we hear and read. We use our predictive skills, skimming, scanning etc. in order to attain true understanding of the material. Teachers, thus, have the responsibility to lessen their students' inability to understand the contents by preparing them with pre-teaching vocabulary drills and careful selection of texts.
