The basic skills needed for language fluency are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Reading and listening are the receptive skills that students can utilize at all levels. Reading can be intimidating because of new words, as well as sentence length and word length, but techniques like scanning, skimming, and deducing from context can be used to gain an understanding of a text that contains unknown words. When introducing a text, either authentic or inauthentic, it helps to first introduce any new or crucial vocabulary that will be used. Listening can be intimidating as well, because once a text is heard, it can be difficult to remember and speaking of course exists in a different dimension than reading, so a student usually cannot go back and rehear the words or look at each one individually. Listening techniques can also include using context clues or predictive skills based on an introduction or title. Listening is more useful than reading in terms of pronunciation, but reading is more useful in terms of understanding the words, and the grammar and spelling they are associated with.
