In this unit I learned about troubleshooting and dealing with several different situations. When delivering first lessons, it is important to establish rapport between students (if the students do not know each other) and between the teacher and students, learn more about the students and their aspirations with English and determine each student's English level. If the class consists of students at different levels of English, then some options for handling such a class include pairing weaker students with stronger students, using different materials depending on the students' levels and using the same materials but assigning different tasks. For large classes, some teaching strategies that are effective include pair and group work, assigning worksheets and involving all students through choral repetition. The use of native language should be restricted by assigning activities at an appropriate level and providing clear explanations to the class. For dealing with reluctant students, similar strategies to the troubleshooting methods mentioned earlier can be used, including pair work and role-play.
