Teach English in DuijiAng Zhen [GAodian XiAng] - Bijie Shi
Unit 20, the last chapter, presents common problem situations which may be encountered by teachers of English as a foreign language. Teachers having their first lessons may be dealing with classes which may fall into two categories--new group or existing group. During the first lesson, the teacher must not solely use and depend on course books, rather, some activities must be done in order to establish rapport, find out essential information about students, such as, their needs, interests, and aspirations. Likewise, it is important that teachers find out the students' English ability level. Furthermore, warming up activities must be done during the teaching-learning process in order to arouse students' interest and sustain enthusiasm. Moreover, various activities may be done for large classes, namely: using worksheets, pairing activities, choral repetition, and the like. Finally, teachers should make it a point that reluctant students are encouraged to use the English language when communicating. Students may be exposed to plenty of pair work, controlled practice, role-plays, and listening exercises.
