Reading & Listening, along with Speaking and Writing, make up the four language skills. The Receptive Skills are Reading and Listening, and the Productive Skills are Speaking and Writing. Different people have different levels of proficiency among each skill. For example, my strongest Spanish language skill is Reading, followed by Speaking, then Listening, then Writing. Different students will need more help on different skills and as the teacher you should be attuned to the individual needs of your students wherever possible while still building up all of the language skills in conjunction with each other. Strengthening one will inevitably strengthen the others as well. This unit covered the Reading and Listening (Receptive) Skills, which include Predictive Skills, Scanning for specific info, Skimming for general info, Detailed Info, and Context deduction. Teaching the R&L Skills can be helped by picking a variety of topics that interest the students, pre-teaching difficult vocabulary, assigning appropriate comprehension tasks, and creating interest with fun and inclusive \"Engage Phase\" activities.
