Unit 7 focuses on grammar, vocabulary and functions in the English language. No matter what the level of your students, there are a few things that all students learning new language need - exposure to the new language, understanding of its meaning and how it's constructed, and the ability to practice and produce the new language. Generally, lessons geared towards teaching grammar or vocabulary tend to follow the \"straight arrow\" ESA approach, whereas functions-based lessons tend to follow \"patchwork\" or \"boomerang\" ESA structures. When teaching vocabulary, the students should come away knowing the following things: the meaning, grammar, usage, spelling, pronunciation and interaction/effect of the new vocabulary when used with other words. When teaching new grammar structures, the students need to know the meaning, usage, spoken and written forms, and the forms and patterns of the new language structure. When teaching language functions, students should also learn the appropriateness of the functions they are using in terms of the kind of language they use - e.g. formal/informal, technical, etc.
