I have learnt about how to teach receptive skills, which are reading and listening, to students. In order to read and listen successfully, students need to have several specialist skills such as scanning, skimming, predictive skills, detailed information, and deduction from context. The choice of topic in teaching reading and listening skills is very important because it will determine if the students will be engaged in those activities or not. Therefore, the teacher has to think of varied topics that will be interesting for students. The teacher should also conduct the lesson in an engaging way, for example using videos, pictures, songs, or starting a discussion about the exciting topics. When choosing a text or dialogue, the teacher has to be carefully consider unknown vocabularies. If it's going to be a problem for the students, it's a good idea to teach those difficult terms first. From that unit I have also learnt an example of structured ESA lesson by using an article about clothing. From the accompanied worksheets, I can have a better understanding in teaching receptive skills to the students.
