Unit 18 wraps up the grammar portion of the course. We?re introduced to Modal Auxiliary Verbs first, which depending on the auxiliary verb adds subtext to the meaning, and defines the level of formality. Although it?s hard for students to remember ?Auxiliary Verb? they?re generally fairly quick to pick up the use especially after using a table like the one of page 3 during a study phase of a lesson. As suggested, role-play, rules and signs would be good ways for students to practice. In terms of active and passive voice, it may seem a little difficult, but the placement or omission of the agent is the key factor in determining which voice it is. Again, samples and tables would easily clarify this for students. Important to know is that the passive is used when it is not know, not important , or we don?t want to say who performs an action. Understanding defining and non-defining clauses, and phrasal verbs however, could be a little challenging. The best way is as the book recommends, throw them into lesson occasionally to familiarize the students with their rules and usage.
