This unit dealt with modals, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice. One of the most interesting and frustrating parts of this unit is, even among native-speakers, there is some flexibility or subjectivity in which modal verb to use in a sentence, and omitting words like, ?that? from passive tense sentences. Over the years, I have been asked questions about when to use modals and, while I can tell there is a difference, I have failed in quantifying the nuances involved in using modals with similar meanings. I like the teaching suggestion of showing students street signs from around the world, and asking them to contemplate the rules. I also liked how the video began with the example of a picture of chairs and circles. The next time I have an advanced level adult class with the freedom to choose my own grammar point, I am going to begin with a series of symbols such as ?do not enter? as a warm up. The main activity will be a charades-like exercise to hopefully elicit many modal verbs and then attempt to demonstrate how, while nuances may be different, there is a degree of flexibility.
