The topic of books and materials was covered in this unit, discussing the potential benefits and hazards of using authentic and created materials in a classroom setting and some tips for how best to apply these resources. I have had some experience using teaching materials, though never in a TESOL setting. However, I had not before made the distinction between authentic vs. created materials, and their associated pros and cons.This unit describes teaching methodologies and their strengths and weaknesses, as well as detailing the stages of appropriate ESA or Engage-Study-Activate lessons. It also provides a number of activities teachers may use for each stage, and suggests resources for further research. In addition, the unit shows three common ways to stage ESA lessons and gives a framework to help new teachers assess if their planning is successful.
