Teaching pronunciation is a very important part of teaching English to non-native speakers. It is not enough to just drill individual words as needed. Instead, it is important to help students learn and use the International Phonetic Alphabet. In addition, students must learn proper intonation and stress. This can be taught more by drills and repetition, as well as drawing the rise/fall, fall/rise, and even intonations on the board.This chapter has been helpful in analyzing the everyday mechanics of English that I take for granted. For example, participles in particular are a function that English possesses that are unique comparable to some other languages and would therefore be difficult to explain to a non-native speaker. This lesson is helping me learn to frame English in a way that is digestible to someone who may never have come in to contact with it before.
