Learning Teaching SkillsCan you become an effective teacher without learning how to teach? Whether you teach yourself how to teach, learn from a colleague or go to school, you can?t become an effective teacher without learning how to teach. What makes an effective teacher is the ability of the students to learn at a constant rate. There are many types of students. students can be beginners, intermediate or advanced. students can also learn English as a second language. Do you think you can walk into a class with students that hardly speak English and teach them how to speak English? I don?t think it?s that simple. Teaching a foreign language to a group of students is a unique skill. A teacher must learn how to grasp the students? attention and learn how to reach them. For instance, I watched two videos of an experience teacher that was teaching beginners how to speak English. During the first video, I noticed lack of attention from the students and the teacher didn?t seem to be effective. The teacher spoke fast, didn?t repeat words and didn?t have much patience. The first step to learning teaching skills is for a teacher to learn their students. It?s important to know the students learning abilities, what students are stronger than others students, how much English the class know and what or their likes. Nevertheless, a teacher needs structure. In the second video, the teacher was enthusiastic, seem to have an understanding of what the students liked and played interesting games with the students. Another component of learning teaching skills is learning what?s effective and what isn?t effective. Some teachers are more effective in certain areas while others are not as effective in certain areas. A good teacher is constantly learning and improving as a teacher. Teachers can learn students by asking the right questions and implement what they learn from their students. students are more incline to learn when the like what they are learning. There are many effective ways to approach a class and a useful skill is developing a sound lesson plan. It takes time and practice to develop a lesson plan, but it builds confidence and structure to reach the students. When a teacher is prepared, their alertness and ability to answer questions can be immediate. Some students learn by visual aids, which is a great tool to use during teaching. Teachers also shouldn?t use the students? mother language if they know it. The more the students use and hear the English language, the more effective and more likely they will learn the language at a constant pace. Furthermore, the students need to be involved in small group settings during study phases. If the class feels a sense of comfort and trust, they will be more inclined to listen and learn. In conclusion, teaching is an acquired skill that takes time, patience and understanding of students. It can be very challenging to teach a group of English learners without a sound lesson plan and know how to reach the class. If a teacher is passionate and willing to learn how to teach, the teacher will likely adapt to the teaching learning curve.
