Classroom ManagementMany of the problems that less experienced and new teachers face in the classroom can be fixed by good classroom management. Together we will take a look at a three important areas of classroom management. We will discuss establishing rapport, generating interest, and proper discipline. Whilst these do not fix every problem in the class, these three facets of classroom management are key and will eliminate many of the problems that arise, if approached correctly. One thing we should strive to do is to establish good rapport with our students. One way to do this is to build students' trust. If the students are able to see that you don't know your material, it will cast doubt in their minds whether you should be teaching them or not. It is very impoprtant to have a great foundation of knowledge of the English language so that you don't make a fool of yourself in front of your students. Establishing good rapport should also include establishing the boundaries for the class. Be the example for the students, not the friend. They will respect you for that. students often can become bored in the class. Boredom can cause behavioral problems and destroy interest in learning the material. You should use topics, that are interesting to the students of your class, to teach the desired grammar. The best way to discover what interests your students is to actually spend time getting to know them. Begin the semester or year with activities that allow the students to express their likes and dislikes. Take note of what you find and incorporate them into your lessons. You can also allow the students to participate in parts of the lesson. students can write answers on the board. They can also be given small tasks and responsibilities that encourage their participation. People learn much more when they are involved and interested in what they are learning about! Discipline is an area that is often handled incorrectly. Some teachers begin the year without proper rules, and then try to pull in the reins after they discover that they have no control. This is the easiest way to give charge to the students and not accomplish your goals for the class. If you're not in charge, the students are in charge. It is better to start out strict and loosen up as the year goes by, than to start out loose and try to gain back control. Another thing to consider about discipline is the student's sensitivity to fairness. It is easy for you to develop favorite students. It is of utmost importance to make sure that rules are enforced fairly and on all students. You should also reward good behavior more than focusing on bad behavior. If a misbehaving students gets all of your attention, it will encourage him to continue mis-behaving. How the students will behave is based upon what you focus on most. Be fair, and be positive. Managing your class well can greatly affect the learning experience for the student. We all desire for our students to retain the material that we teach. Our students success largely depends on us. If we manage our classes well, the learning experience will be great, and our students will have a better chance of being successful.
