Lesson planningLesson planning is an essential element of any well thought out course it helps provide a blueprint for the up coming class and can be used by substitute teachers to get an understanding of the student?s typical lessons and progress. Well thought out lesson plans will not only help with the running of classes but also keep a record of materials used subjects covered and the problems a teacher may have encountered in the classroom. A good lesson plan will usually consist of a record of witch class it is for who?s taking the class and how many students are in the class .It will also have the objective of the class (what the teacher expects the students to learn) and the objective of the teacher (what the teacher expects to learn) a list of materials needed for the class the types of activities that will be done and the time it will take to do them. Although some experienced teachers may not feel a lesson plan is necessary it represents best practice for the teaching industry and is needed by many teachers to provide structure to their class without it a teacher may become overwhelmed by questions imposed by students and not be able to keep to the class objective. If this was allowed to happen the students then would not get a full education and may be studying the same thing over and over this is why lesson plans are preferred by the majority of teachers and expected of teachers by most learning institutions. To start a lesson plan a teacher must come up with an objective this will define the lesson and create a purpose for the class then a teacher must think of or find activities that will help the students for fill this objective. A typical tefl (teaching English as a foreign language )class will have three main components an engage stage a study stage and an activate stage this is a popular method of teaching called E.S.A and the activities that a teacher chooses for this type of class will differ than that of a traditional school. The E.S.A method of teaching is very lesson plan friendly because it already splits the class into segments so the teacher just has to find the activities that fit into these stages .Once a teacher chooses an objective and finds activities for the students to use to for fill this objective they just have to put it into practice this can be difficult if the lesson plan is to scripted as the students interaction with the teacher can not be fully anticipated so the teacher should take care to try and not script their lessons .The lesson plan is an outline or blue print for a lesson and not a script. A lesson plan is defined by wikipeidia as a teachers detailed description of the course for one class and in my opinion is an invaluable resource to any teacher not just for organization but for future records as well I would recommend that any teacher whether it be the teacher of an English class or a personal trainer strongly consider taking the time to prepare a lesson plan.
