ProblemsForLearnersSouth korea has had a foreign presence since the first Jesuit and Presbyterian missionaries arrived in the 19th century. These missionaries built schools and taught English. korea went through numerous periods of being submitted under foreign powers, and as a result became defensive to anything and anyone from the outside world. While some foreigners were able to stay and teach, korea was by no means opening up to the world voluntarily, or by force, as had happened in Japan. It was only until the colonization by Japan, that korea was modernized by Western standards, and was given the education system, whose structure and customs still linger in today?s independent korea. The problems that learners have in korea, stem not only from the mistrust brought on by a turbulent past, but also lie in deeply ingrained traditions and cultural norms. In this short essay, I am going to discuss some of the issues, then and now, that currently inhibit the potential progress of English education.
