Multiple IntelligencesAccording to Howard Gardner, Ph.D, the founding father of the Multiple Intelligences Theory. (Gardner) Multiple intelligence assumes that students have various intelligences ? at least 8 different intelligences, which is drawn from in the study process. It also presumes that the teacher of the Tefl student will do well in catering for each of the intelligences in the class, in order to reach all the students and cater for all the different learning styles, through the adoption of the different teaching styles. Have you ever wondered after a lesson ? what went wrong? how can I get through to the students?, questioning yourself on your teaching approach? Have you ever thought that you may teach more effectively by using visual aids physically activity, for example role play, games, song, rhymes ect to teach the students. What is your multiple intelligence? The seven primary intelligences identified by Gardner include linguistic intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and intrapersonal intelligence. The eighth, Naturalistic intelligence was not part of Gardner's original framework but was added to include those who excel in the realm of natural science. Below is an explanation of the different intelligences. Linguistic intelligence ? this refers to an individual's capacity to use language effectively as a means of expression and communication through the written or spoken word. (Examples: poets, writers, and comedians. Visual -Spatial intelligence ? refers to the ability to sense form, space, color, line and shape. Visual intelligent people are able to graphically represent their visual and spatial ideas. (Examples artists, decorators, architects and pilots). Logical-Mathematical intelligence ? refers to the ability to reason and use numbers effectively (Examples: mathematicians, lawyers and scientists). Interpersonal (Social) intelligence ? refers to the ability to understand another person's moods, feelings, motivations, and intentions. (Examples: sales people, politicians, religious leaders, and talk show hosts). Intrapersonal intelligence ? refers to the ability to understand yourself - your strengths, weakness, moods, desires and intentions. (Examples: therapists, philosophers). Musical intelligence - People with musical intelligence have the ability to sense rhythm, pitch and melody. They often use rhythm and music as a way to memorize things. (Examples: singers and composers). Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ? these people are able to use their whole body in expressing ideas and feelings. (Examples: dancers, actors, and athletes). Naturalistic intelligence ? refer to the ability to recognize and classify plants, minerals, and animals. This has to do with how we relate to our surroundings, these people has a sensitivity and appreciation for nature. (Examples: botanists, farmers). Teachers are aware of the diversity in the Tefl classroom. In the TEFL classroom the teacher can use different methods to deliver the lesson, by incorporating different activities to cover all the intelligences, thus ensuring maximum exposure of students to different intelligences, in order to reach and meet the learning objectives for the lesson. The following are examples of teaching strategies that can be used to maximize effectiveness of the lesson: worksheets, group or pair work, questions and answer, wordplay, interviewing each other, riddles and listening to stories power points, dvd, movie clips, illustrations, charts, tables and maps, word searches, role plays, music, songs, rhymes, patterns, classifying and categorizing activities It is therefore important for the teacher to build a relationship with their students and to find out what the strengths and weaknesses of the students are. students should be encouraged to use their strengths in order to make the learning process more obtainable. Armed with this information and by making simple changes to their lessons to incorporate a variety of Intelligence learning styles, the tefl teachers can effortlessly meet and exceed their lesson objectives.
