Online vs onsiteThe question of choosing an online tefl course or an onsite course can come down to the needs, situation and expectations of the student. To get a balanced idea of which may be best suited we should look at the individual courses which have the same time frame to complete, say 6 months Online tefl course. (With tutor) One of the obvious benefits of taking this course is simply because they are considerably cheaper. The student can work from home or at a place of their own choosing and at their own pace. They can carry on working at what ever they do and still complete the units in their spare time. They also don?t have to make special arrangements to work around attending classes. The material used in the course is designed for self learning and not too difficult to follow. The same material is used in online courses are much the same as in other tefl courses, i.e. the material / units cover the subjects that will be taught in a Tell class and so provides a good grounding. The tutor is on hand to give advice / direction and correct any mistakes as the course progresses. (I would not recommend an online course without a tutor as the student would not know if they were on the right path or not). Onsite tefl course. To get from behind the computer and to have hands on approach to teaching can only be good. It gives the students ideas of what to expect in the real TEFL world and how to deal with problems. They are able to put into practice teaching methods and can see how to teach for example certain difficult grammatical points. (Teach the Past perfect tense so the class understands it). Talking with the tutor and other students on a face to face level would make the whole course more interesting and fun. Just being there, watching, working and part taking in a class room environment a huge advantage. It?s the best next thing to the real thing and will prepare the student for when they begin to teach at a real school. It would give them the confidence they need to begin teaching. It will also give the student an idea if they are suited to teaching or not. (It may be that they are simply not cut out to teach. They will know while taking the course). In my case I decided to take the online course for a number of reasons. The main one being that I have taught Tefl classes before and so have ?broken the ice?, as it were, and know what to expect. The material/units taught are just what I need to teach and working from home without having to make any special arrangements has suited me well. It may be that future employees may look on ?onsite diplomas? more favourably as they can see the candidate has at least some experience in standing in front of a class, but once you have been teaching for a few months it may not seem to be so important. I do think it important to take a course, be it online or onsite, that gives you enough time to digest the information given in the course and you can do your own research. Some of the courses, which are for one month, I feel are too intensive. The students are given so much material to learn and in such a tight time frame, I wonder how much they actually take in. (Also onsite can be very expensive) It really depends on the students and their needs. If their happy to work alone, with the tutor as guide, then the online course will provide the tools nessercary to teach Tefl. If working with others in a class room environment and interacting suits better then the onsite course is for them.
