Why complete a tefl course As an educator, focused on obtaining a deep understanding of how to use cultural and linguistic diversity as resources in educational settings, I see the tefl course as a platform upon which to launch new ideas. I believe that it is important to understand the challenges associated with educating linguistically diverse students in respect to refraining from transforming the diversity in the classroom into a monolithic, English-speaking and American-thinking community. This need to integrate without inclusion of culture and awareness of language ability is where many American primary school level English programs receive a failing grade. This is why I believe that it is essential that all teachers take a tefl course whether they are traveling overseas to teach or within their community. I believe that the strategies presented in the tefl course will not only improve and fill teacher?s skill boxes but as well bridge the gap between teacher?s community/ culture and the students they teach, especially in urban communities. I believe that we have become a world of single passport holders trying to navigate the global market and yet discovering that a bilingual and culturally-aware citizenry is needed to go beyond. Furthermore when learning English as a Second Language, there are so many problems that as native speakers we are not aware of, such as common misunderstandings, lexical problems and other issues that may arise as a result. We are unprepared to teach students effectively and in a way that will expose them to the different variations of language use, help them to understand its meaning, understand how it?s constructed and be able to practice and produce it. However, luckily, tefl course units outline all of these aspects of the language in relation to reading, writing, speaking and listening and teach the learner how to put them into practice. In addition to the unit exercises, the course also provides different links to websites that can assist new teachers like example activities and lesson plans. Another very helpful aspect is that the course takes the learner through step-by-step problem solving techniques from anticipating student?s responses to possible pronunciation difficulties that may arise and then provides advice on how to deal with those issues.
