This course was very beneficial to me. I come from a Construction Management background which may sound completely far from teaching english, but there are quite a few parallels. For instance, as a contractor, I would have to relay messages to make sure my subcontractors build what is expected to be built. Teaching english is similar by teaching the students what they are expected to learn. This course has taught me how to approach different learners, how to make lesson plans, and refreshed me in the different tenses. All of these are important for successful teaching by making sure that the students stay engaged. The course has given me many tips to approach course books and classroom materials that I had never thought of previous tot his. Also how to manage students in such a way as to not be offensive, yet be respectful of different cultures. I plan to put all these tools into use. Since I have no teaching experience, each unit taught me valuable lessons that I never was aware of as a student sitting in the classroom. One valuable lesson is the Activate stage in a lesson plan. I never realized how crucial an activate stage was to getting students comfortable in speaking and socializing in english. I have always believed that you can be strong at a language on paper vs. speaking and the Activate stage helps close that gap. I am excited to put these practices into play and see how successful a classroom can be with these instruments.
