This unit covers best practices for selecting course books and materials. It reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of authentic vs. created texts. I learned that course books are useful for providing guided, progressive materials that continually review and include tried and tested practice covering a variety of skills. However course books can also become boring or seem outdated and they may stifle creativity with their one-size-fits-all approach. The best practice, especially for new teachers, is to use course books as a guide but also adapt, omit, and supplement material to fit individual student?s need and maintain interest. Finally, I learned some principles for evaluating materials when I have the power to choose.
