Grammar is said to be the trunk and branches while vocabulary would be the leaves. Grammar provides the structure and vocabulary gives it beauty. Students need to be aware of their receptive vocabulary, words they understand but can't use, and their productive vocabulary, words they know and can use. When selecting vocabulary the teacher should me mindful that it is appropriate for the student and the task, it's frequency of use, and it's teachability. Students need to know the meaning of words, their use, it's part of speech, how it interacts with other words, and how to spell and pronounce it.
