Teaching receptive skills requires understanding how students will respond to different types of information that is presented to them. For example, responding to detailed information when it is presented non-authentically in text form is quite different than when it is presented in an authentic text. In particular, the selection of authentic texts presents issues and considerations beyond the obvious: Are my students ready for language that isn?t specifically designed for language learners? Is the subject matter of specific authentic text appropriate or varied enough for my students? These questions, while simple on the surface, can present their own set of challenges that need to be addressed before the start of the lesson.
