This unit teaches about the receptive skills reading and listening. Both are equally important although listening tends to cause more problems than reading. This is due to the fact that the student can read and reread the vocabulary on paper as many times as necessary in order to comprehend the content. Whereas with listening there is only one shot to hear the vocabulary being spoken and the word or words are never seen in writing. Teachers can use pre-teaching as a way to help students understand difficult vocabulary before an assignment or project is started. But teachers should try to avoid trying to teach too many vocab words in the beginning. This can overwhelm and/or discourage the students before the assignment or project begins.
