I didn't realize that in teaching writing to students, penmanship was so important. It makes sense now that the students will need to be able to recognize the characters in not only their own writing but in the text that they read. I think it's also very important to teach correct spelling in writing because it engraves the language in their developing minds. I liked the distinction between the fluency activities (creative speech) and the accuracy activities (controlled speech). It helped me realize the different approaches to learning to speak a language. The students can't perpetually be corrected or else they'll never realize the flow of the language, but they also can't not be corrected or else they won't learn the true language.
