This unit introduced several methods of language instruction, but focused almost exclusively on the benefits of the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) approach. I appreciate this method, and certainly have seen it in use now that I reflect on prior courses that I have taken in studying other (non-English) languages. The key is to book-end the lesson with periods (Engage and Activate, respectively) in which the students all participate and are encouraged to use English. This stresses that the best way for students to learn a language is to use it themselves. The Study phase is important to educate students on new topics and to carefully correct errors and allow students to correct mistakes so that they can continue to practice English properly.
