In this unit, we covered the techniques used in teaching new language, such as vocabulary and grammatical structures. The main idea behind many of these techniques is to figure out the most useful and necessary information for the students. Teaching the etymology of words, for example, is rarely as useful as teaching the part of speech of those words. Likewise, discussing the frequency of a certain grammatical structure is less helpful than providing a plethora of examples for that structure. Along with determining the proper type and amount of information to teach, the instructor must strategically structure the lesson. Whether the teacher employs a straight-arrow, patchwork, or boomerang structure depends on the students and the material.
