The unit explores various aspects of the receptive skills; reading and listening. Two of the four basic skills, it was interesting to learn that they can be categorized into two groups, for purpose or for entertainment. Although explaining both skills, the information seemed to be focused more on reading, providing a list of ways people receive language such as skimming, prediction and deduction which tended to be supplied with examples for reading. Some of the information on how to teach the receptive skills were useful to know, and were clearly explained. The task materials were good model texts, although I thought some of the photos were inappropriate and the ageist sentence on page 9 would not be suitable for a class of mature students.
