In this unit, I learned about three different evaluation techniques: tutorials, student self-evaluation, and tests. In regards to tests, I learned that there are five different types: placement, progress, diagnostic, practice, and external. Placement tests are used to measure student ability with the purpose of placing them in the right level class. Progress tests are for the teacher and focus on assessing what the students have and have not retained from previous lessons. Diagnostic tests are also for the teacher so that he or she may better tailor lessons to student strengths and weaknesses. Practice tests are for preparation of external exams. External exams provide proof to future schools or employers of a person's English ability.
