Conditionals are one of the many things that as a native speaker you pick up from hearing the language daily. It is interesting to know and think about the different conditionals. There is a form that they take and as a native speaker you do not think about the form you just speak and write it naturally. The same goes with reported speech. In relying information to another party you change direct speech to reported speech naturally and typically do not think to much of it because it's a natural ability. It is important to remember, especially in English with all the exceptions, that non-native speakers need general forms and rules to help them learn the language. They can learn the exceptions later but they need the forms and general rules first.
