Unit 9 addresses lesson planning. Although the reading does not propose a one size fits all approach, it does provide some important guidelines to consider when designing lesson plans. Identifying the class level within lesson plan is important as this can aid the appropriateness of the targeted learning objectives, activities and aids. Considering the estimated time taken by each activity within the lesson is also critical as this can aid the amount of content allocated within the ESA stages. On another time related thread, an aspect that can influence the students? talk time is the expected interactions at each stage of the lesson plan: e.g. student-teacher, student-student, or students working alone. Failure to consider these interactions may lead for teachers to neglect the students? talk time during the lesson. Another aspect to consider in the designing of lesson plans are anticipated student and teacher problems with their corresponding solutions. Documenting situations that arise from anticipated problems within the lesson plan are important as they can aid in continual improvements for future lessons. Beyond the prior mentioned guidelines, the reading indicates that lesson plans can also help teachers stay on task, but that task-orientation should not be at the expense of being flexible when responding to student needs.
