A student's language level can be assessed in several ways. Some methods include tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Tutorials can be done in a group or with individuals. They take time, so it is likely not possible to have one every day, but they can be used as an end-of-week review to make sure the students have their questions answered and understand the objectives of the lessons. Evaluation by the students in regards of the course, and not the personality of the teacher, can help create genuine interaction that allows the teachers to plan for future lessons and help the teacher understand how the students react to what they do. Tests should often be given at different stages in a course. Placement tests at the beginning of a course can help with the formation of groups, and diagnostic tests tell the teacher and student what the students do and don't know. Periodic progress tests can help give information on how the students are progressing, and don't necessarily need to be in the form of formal tests. Regularly given practice tests are a good way to help the students prepare for a final external exam. There are several general external examinations, including the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and the Test of English for Internal Communication (TOEIC).
