Teach English in Xiajia Zhen - Baise Shi — Bose
This unit discussed the basics on what makes a good teacher and the different roles that a teacher could play. Having taught ESL for three years myself, what makes a good teacher and a good student are intuitive for me. You need to know the subject matter your teaching while also connecting with the students by being entertaining and engaging. As a teacher you need to take on many different roles, to keep the class interesting and tap into the students different learning styles. These roles include manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model, and observer. As a teacher, you need to determine which role to take on and when. The unit also discusses what makes a good learner including an eagerness to participate and ask questions while thinking about how they are learning and accepting error correction. The unit also goes over the difference between adults and children learners and touches on keeping cultural differences in mind. It gives a general overview of the different levels: beginner, elementary, low intermediate, intermediate, high intermediate and advanced. The unit points out that each level can vary greatly depending on the country and/or books you're using. Lastly, it touches on what motivates a student to learn English, including travel, career advancement, and to improve their test scores.
