In this unit, we learned the qualities and roles of teachers and learners and the importance of being a good teacher/good learner. We learned the characteristics of a good teacher: such as a caring nature, love of teaching and ability to motivate learners, as well as the different roles of teachers in the classroom. This is was beneficial, as it highlights the many natures of teaching and responsibilities we have as a teacher in another cultural context and the different ways we may approach teaching in those specific countries/cultures. In this unit, we also looked at the difference between young learners and adult learners, and the key differences between the two. This includes how they interact with learning experiences, particular challenges such as fear, nervousness and attention span, and we learned the methods in how to address these differences. Lastly, we looked at language itself, and the different levels of language, and why people are motivated to learn new languages. I feel that this unit help me understand how to properly look at the classroom setting from both perspectives and show how important it is for teachers to understand the complexity of our relationship with learners. It also has helped me understand different methods of approaching teaching abroad and how I can implement different methods to be a more successful teacher.
