Teach English in Tongde XiAng - Baise Shi — Bose
This unit deals with several situations that teachers can experience, and what to do to help resolve these problem situations. The situations commented on include first lessons, warmer-uppers, different levels of students, large classes, use of native languages, and reluctant students. First lessons are important to teachers because they are meeting their students for the first time, and they might be new groups in which everybody is new to each other and to the learning process. To establish rapport, the teacher can use a survey or questionnaire, or use board games like \"tell us about...\" or \"pass the ball\" game. \"Warmers\" are brief, enjoyable communicative activities to motivate students, including Pictionary and memory games. When there are students of varying levels in the class, teachers can use different materials for stronger students compared to the weaker students, or pair stronger with weaker students so the stronger students can help and advise the others. To help students who are overusing their native language, the teacher can make sure the materials are at an appropriate level for study and are not too difficult, and encourage them to use English when and where appropriate. Reluctant students, who appear not to want to participate in class, may benefit from pair work, use of controlled practice and use of roleplay.
