Teach English in Tianzhou Zhen - Baise Shi — Bose
Unit 7 focuses on how to teach students new language, such as vocabulary, grammar, and functional language. When encountering new language, students need four things: to be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it?s constructed, and to be able to practice and produce it. Learning only grammar would be ineffective without learning vocabulary and functions as well; teachers should be able to introduce new language in a balanced way. Often, grammar and vocabulary lessons use a ?straight arrow? ESA structure, while functional language uses a ?boomerang? or ?patchwork? ESA structure. This is not a rule, however. Unit 7 discusses teaching and selecting appropriate vocabulary for students. Students need to know the meaning, use, grammar, interaction (with other words), spelling, and pronunciation of new vocabulary. The unit provides some techniques and sample ESA lessons for teaching vocabulary. As for new grammatical structures, students need to learn the meaning, use, forms and patterns, and spoken versus written forms. Common techniques and sample ESA lessons are provided for teaching new grammar. Language functions, such as inviting or refusing someone, usually take on ?patchwork? and ?boomerang? lesson plan structures. Unit 7 provides a sample ESA lesson for functional language.
