In this unit I have learnt all about the English sound system, the International Phonetic Alphabet, intonation and stress and how to teach pronunciation to English learners. There are 24 consonant phonemes, 12 vowels phonemes and 8 diphthongs phonemes in the English language. I have learned about each consonant phoneme`s place and manner of articulation and how to teach individual sounds to students. I think teaching pronunciation at an early stage is very important, because the sound system of English is very different from the sound system of other languages. Students might not be able to pronounce English words correctly without a proper teaching of individual sounds. Also, since English is not a phonetic language like other European languages, it is very difficult for students to understand the relationship between sounds and alphabet. In English, the letter-sound relationship is not always a one-to-one relationship. Sometimes one letter represents more than one sound and sometimes different letters represent more than one sound. The English language has a very particular intonation and stress system and teaching intonation and stress to students is also very important. If the students are able to speak English with the right pronunciation and stress, they have more chances to be understood by native speakers and to speak English like a native.
