Teach English in Nanpo XiAng - Baise Shi — Bose
Unit 10 shows TEFL course students how the theoretical materials studied in the previous nine units are applied in a real-life ESA classroom. Videos of two contrasting ESA demonstration classes are provided. Although these two classes involve the same teacher and set of students, they differ markedly in the teacher?s attitude and teaching techniques ? as well as the lesson structure and content. Hence, there is also a noticeable difference in the resulting attitude, understanding and participation levels of the English language students. This unit gave me the valuable opportunity to observe the difference between an effective and ineffective ESA grammar lesson within the same setting. I learnt that a teacher?s attitude and teaching style has a significant influence on the atmosphere in the classroom, the progress of the lesson, and the students? motivation to participate and learn. This is evident in the ESA demonstration class 2 where the teacher?s positive and structured approach inspired a higher level of interest and confidence amongst students, who in turn were more relaxed and willing to participate. I also observed the powerful effect of pictures and gestures in the ESA demonstration class 2, which helped elicit more vocabulary in the Engage phase and also clarified the teacher?s instructions in the Activate phase.
