Common problem situations arise in TEFL and it is good to be able to troubleshoot them and prepare for or anticipate problems that may arise. Common problem situations include first lessons, teaching different levels, large classes, students using native language, reluctant students, and difficulty with listening texts. Rapport needs to be established between students and the teacher for all new classes, but will also need to be established if teaching a new group. Warmers help to get the students motivated to speak and learn English by being fun, short communicative activities and games. Different level students can be given different materials, put into different groups, paired appropriately, or the students can simply find their own level within the class. Large classes create an opportunity for group leaders/help with classroom management, worksheet use, pair/group work, choral repetition, and present a need for clarity. Students will naturally want to use their native language but should be encouraged as much as possible to use English. Some students may be reluctant, it is important not to force these students to participate but to help make it more comfortable for them through such activities as pair work and role play. Listening texts may need to have new/difficult vocabulary pre-taught, or may need to be played more than once.
