One of the most important things that a teacher of English should do when preparing for a class is to be mindful of who the students are. Elementary school students in Japan will have vastly different needs, interest levels, and abilities from business people in Brazil. As always, the teacher should consider the level of English that the students already command, as well as their cognitive abilities (due to age and/or fatigue), and where their motivation lies. Once the teacher has ascertained the needs and interests of the students, one's practice should be adapted so as to best appeal to these in order to keep students engaged, interested, and successful. Also note that these may change on a day to day basis -- for example, if everyone in the class is extremely tired on a particular day, it might be better to focus on conversation and/or review earlier material rather than trying to teach new material to people who will not be able to retain it in such a fatigued state. Despite the vastly different approaches that teachers of English may choose to adopt according to their students' needs and interests, a couple features remain the same across the board. Namely, teachers should strive to use only English in the classroom rather than allowing students to rely on their native language(s), and a professional attitude and presentation should always be adopted.
