Unit Ten covered the different kinds of exams taken inside and outside of language schools, including tutorials, evaluations by the students, and tests. Often a teacher will not have much time to do tutorials, but it can be helpful to run over progress made after every class. Evaluations by the students can help the teacher adjust his or her teaching style, subject matter, or any other parts of the class that could be better according to the students. Lastly, tests are often required by schools to monitor student progress, place students in classes, or gauge a teacher's effectiveness. There are placement tests to place students in classes, progress tests to monitor student progress, diagnostic tests to assess what the students already know, and practice tests in order to prepare students for external exams. The unit covered what external exams are most common in ESL, such as the TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, and Cambridge assessments, as well as what purpose each exam has. I personally believe that tests are more accurate in judging memory than actual knowledge, however, it was helpful to know what kind of tests exist and the best way to prepare my students for each kind. I will most likely end up teaching in a school that requires testing or prepares students for external exams, so knowing what kind of materials and practice exams will be adequate was very helpful.
