Unit 19 content is Teaching Special Groups, covering teaching Beginners, Individual Students, Children, Business English, Monolingual and Multilingual Classes. Categories of beginners are defined: Absolute, False, Adult, Young, and Without Roman Alphabet beginners; and tips given for teaching beginner classes. For teaching individual students, suggestions are given for suitable 1-1 activities and giving homework. Teaching children is presented as perhaps the most rewarding of all student classes. Content includes ideas for the classroom environment, lesson do's and don'ts, class discipline and management, with a summary of classroom don'ts. Business English covers the types of clients, and their language needs, the use of a Needs Analysis, and planning, presenting and evaluating the programme. The section also introduces English for Specific Purposes; for example, teaching the language of law to lawyers. Monolingual classes are usually in the students' home country, whereas Multilingual classes are in English speaking countries where students are residing, or there to learn English. Information is provided to assist with teaching these two groups. As the course draws to a conclusion, it is timely to consider these different groups, how I might be involved with teaching one or more of these groups, and to be looking for an opportunity to begin teaching ESOL.
