Unit 1 provides information about the roles and effectiveness of good teachers and students. The personality of a teacher and his/her relationship with the students has a big impact on the effectiveness of his/her teaching. A good teacher will be generally be kind, patient, motivating, and have a good rapport with the students. A good teacher cares about teaching, but cares more about the progress and success of his/her students. The teacher has various roles to play in the classroom setting, including manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, etc. and should know how and when to switch between these roles to benefit the students. A good learner should have a desire to learn and ask questions, and also be receptive to feedback for improvement. Students? backgrounds may affect their learning (factors such as age, learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behavior problems, life experience, culture and first language will affect their classroom experience) and teachers should always take these factors into consideration in the classroom and when teaching. Unit 1 also defines and classifies the different levels of ability in English among students and some of the differences a teacher can expect when teaching each level. Unit 1 also provides many of the common reasons of motivation that learners have for studying English.
