In this lesson I learned about teaching and learning in relation to young learners. I learned that although the age group from five to thirteen is technically considered the ?Young learner? age group, this age group can be broken down into smaller more defined age groups. These divisions are separated into five to nine-year-old children and nine to thirteen-year-old children. There are multiple theories on learning and development for young learners which include the maturation theory, the environmental theory, constructivism, and the cognitive developmentalist theory. The maturation theory states that human development follows biology alone, and that no outside sources affect it. The environmental theory states that the environment we live in plays a fundamental role in how we develop as people and individuals. The constructivism theory is a mixture between the first two theories and the cognitive developmentalist theory states that there are different stages in our development. The younger of the two age groups tends to have a lesser attention span and doesn?t like to follow instructions, whereas the older group likes structure and the teacher talking time can be increased. The learning environment refers to many factors, but seating can most definitely be one of them. The most effective seating arrangement in the classroom is a semi-circle.
