Teach English in Leli Zhen - Baise Shi — Bose
Almost every unit encourages some kind of engage activity where students must conjure up some English. This is by asking questions about their favorite activities or using holiday brochures to engage and elicit the target grammar/vocabulary. The idea where they are supposed to openly talk about their home and rooms without any outline or structure to follow is particularly difficult to me. I teach at a high school level but they absolutely freeze at any production of English, especially with new material. I attempted to teach the new vocabulary \"increase\" and \"decrease\" recently. I tried to play a simple game to engage the whole class and increase STT but it ended up taking twenty minutes and having to individually walk up to the students desk to push them to talk. All they had to do was name any item or thing (video games, judo, oranges, pens), and the person will say \"increase\" if they think it is increasing in popularity or \"decrease\" if they think it is decreasing. However, the students could not recall any vocabulary word. Not one. I team teach and my teacher ended up allowing them to say the item or thing in Japanese. That is why I think the \"engage\" and \"activate\" stages are very idealistic in this book when introducing new material. No matter how simple I make it, they refuse to participate in anything that involves production of English.
