Course books and teacher created materials are a topic that brings lots of emotions to staff meetings at the end of the school year when the currently used course book needs to be evaluated and the teachers need to decide if we keep it or if we prefer another one. The problem is that at the end of the school year the teachers are over-familiar with the course book they have been using and a different one can look like a breath of fresh air, but sometimes after they decided on a different course book and worked with it for a school year they realize that the previous one was better. So as it is stated in the course material in unit 9 it is important to consider all aspects of the book and evaluating it properly before making a decision. I personally think that it is important to have a good structured book that covers all the aspects of the language the students need to learn during that year (the teacher's guide gives you that information) Secondly, the course book needs to be flexible enough so that the ESA teaching method can be used, and finally it should not be too rigid so that it allows for the teacher to use her own created materials. Department head should be carefully monitoring the teaching practice in the classroom to make sure that teachers don't become slaves of their course books which will lead to boring lessons and unmotivated students
