An understanding of grammar is the most essential part of learning English after vocabulary. In order for someone to communicate in English they need to have some basic grammar, so a teacher of English should also be knowledgeable in grammar. Most native English speakers understand grammar enough to speak and write properly but few know exactly why we do it this way. When we teach we need to understand the why part of grammar so that we can answer those questions our students have. While it's easy for native speakers to know what sounds right, it's important for teachers of English to be able to explain why they sound right.
