Receptive skills include reading and listening, but lessons should also bring in other skills for a fully integrated class. Lessons on receptive skills should be based on topics that interest the students. Lesson tasks should promote understanding rather than just checking for understanding, and can use both authentic and inauthentic texts. Pre-teaching vocabulary can be helpful, however we should encourage learning to understand texts without knowing every word. Receptive specialist skills that should be promoted include predictive skills, scanning, skimming, reading detailed information, and deducting meaning from context.
