In this lesson, I learned about course books and lesson materials for the classroom. When teaching a language, there are two kinds of materials. Some are called authentic materials and others are called created materials. Authentic materials are anything that a native speaker would write, read, or hear in their normal lives. These could be things like menus, T.V. shows, brochures, newspapers, songs, etc. These add more interest for the students because they are real foreign resources. Created materials are things that have been created and designed by the teacher to help supplement their lessons. Some typical examples are crossword puzzles, flashcards, gap fill exercises, word searches, etc. I also learned that there are pros and cons to course books, and choosing which ones are to be used in a classroom should be done so very carefully by a teacher. They are good because they provide stability for both teacher and student, and can give the teacher an entire lesson plan and/or the bare bones of one. They can be a disadvantage because they don?t always cater to the needs of an individual set of students.
